The bitter conflict currently raging between various Maltese media houses is better than the new Game of Thrones episode, according to critics.
While Game of Thrones fans in Malta will be eagerly tuning in to the first episode of the final season this evening, it is the ongoing media feud centered around each newspaper’s commercial relationships that has caught the eye of several entertainment journalists.
“Forget Westeros, the Maltese Media Civil War is where it’s at, wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Tiina Ripatti.
“Sure, it doesn’t have dragons or zombies, but it does have fierce editorial battles featuring snide accusations of conflicts of interest, and of course Saviour Balzan, who wouldn’t be out of place if he were in ‘Thrones’, haphazardly swinging a huge battle-axe at friend and foe alike.”
“To the casual observer, the Maltese Media War may seem like a childish playground spat. And they’re right, but I can’t get enough of it,” wrote Rolling Stone’s Hugh Janus.
“What will happen next? Will The Shift and Manuel Delia get involved? Where’s Lovin Malta? Will Kristy Debono get caught in a meeting with Keith Schembri himself? I’m on tenterhooks for the next installment.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told Bis-Serjetà he isn’t following Game of Thrones or ‘Civil War’, preferring to spend his evenings laughing maniacally with wife Michelle instead.
Bis-Serjetà itself is not involved in the Maltese Media Civil War, because we are a serious organisation and therefore better than everyone.
