AD+PD have insisted that their members will never accept gifts from wealthy businessmen when the party wins an election.
The Alternattiva Demokratika/Partit Demokratiku alliance made the statement after it was revealed that PN MP Jason Azzopardi had received free accommodation in Tel Aviv courtesy of Ray Fenech, the uncle of Yorgen Fenech.
“Unlike Jason Azzopardi, AD+PD genuinely believes in the rule of law. Therefore, when we take the reigns of power after storming to a landslide victory at the next election, we promise to never accept gifts – no matter how small – from hoteliers, developers and other businessmen,” party leader Carmel Cacopardo said.
“An AD+PD minister caught doing so will be forced to resign from government immediately, and will have to either become an independent or join Labour and PN on the opposition benches, where he shall remain forever as we shepherd Malta into a new era of alternative democratic democracy.”
Later, former Partit Demokratiku leader Timothy Alden clarified that PD ministers would be allowed to accept gifts under €25.
Meanwhile, fellow small party Imperium Europa said that they too would not accept corporate gifts once in power, unless the gift in question happened to be a piece of Nazi memorabilia.
Editor’s note: Timothy Alden is not a member of AD+PD. It is unclear why he commented.
