Yorgen Fenech has requested that the court allow him to have a puppy in prison.
Fenech – who stands accused of masterminding the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia – relayed the request to Magistrate Rachel Montebello via his lawyers during this morning’s compilation of evidence.
“Yorgen asks if he can please please please have a puppy, Your Honour. He promises he’ll feed it, clean up after it and take it for walks. Can he? Can he, pleeeeeease?” defence lawyer Charles Mercieca pleaded
“Our client is struggling to to socialise in prison. The other inmates pretend like they want to get to be his friends, but he knows it’s only because he’s super rich. We believe denying our client access to a pupper goes against his fundamental human rights,” chimed in fellow lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran.
Montebello denied Fenech’s request, citing the fact that he had been a very naughty boy.
“Furthermore, a puppy is for life, not life in prison. I am also reluctant to give you access to another animal, after what happened with the last one,” Magistrate Montebello said, referring to the court’s decision last year to grant Fenech access to a pet homing pigeon, only for him to use it to smuggle cocaine into the prison grounds.
“And even if I did let you have a puppy, [prison director] Alexander Dalli would probably take it off you and eat it. That man genuinely terrifies me,” she said.
Reacting to the magistrate’s pronouncement, Fenech could be heard saying “Awwwwhhhh.”
