Prime Minister Robert Abela has co-opted his personal yacht into parliament.
The yacht, a 16-metre-long Azimut 50 Fly called ‘Kburi’, will take the place of Gavin Gulia, who yesterday resigned his seat in parliament minutes after being sworn in.
“I believe Kburi will be a great servant to the people of Malta. He is determined and doesn’t let obstacles like waves get in his way,” Abela said of his €1.2 million yacht which, once sworn into parliament, will be tasked with overseeing the maritime sector.
“Furthermore, he has good relations with our neighbours, especially Sicily.”
To provide accessibility for Kburi, the open-air theatre adjacent to the parliament building will be torn down and replaced with a yacht marina.
The Prime Minister said he hoped Kburi’s co-option would encourage other sea-craft to enter politics.
“You don’t have to have three cabins and a teak interior like Kburi. Even if you’re a small wooden rowing boat, you can still make a big difference. And you’ll probably be more useful than Silvio Parnis.”
