An Armed Forces patrol boat is on its way to wish a Happy Easter to hundreds of migrants currently adrift on dinghies in Malta’s search and rescue zone.
The AFM has been criticised for failing to respond to distress calls and appeals by various NGOs. But in a statement, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said patrol boat P61 had set off from Hay Wharf and was now en route to the area where the dinghies had last been sighted.
“The crew of the patrol boat has been tasked with finding the migrants and wishing them a Happy Easter from the Christian island of Malta. Before returning, they will also hand out figolli and Easter eggs as a token of our famous generosity,” Camilleri told Bis-Serjetà.
“It’s also worth noting that since Easter Eggs are hollow, they can serve as makeshift flotation devices in case the dinghies capsize,” he added.
Asked if the patrol boat would be rescuing the migrants, the minister said:
“Of course not. Malta full-up ħi. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to attend Easter mass.”
Would you miss Bis-Serjetà if it were gone?
