A hunter who has never reported another hunter for breaking the law says poachers are ‘very sneaky’.
Earlier this week, a poacher was arrested after he was witnessed killing a honey buzzard, while another was filmed shooting at a turtle dove at Chadwick lakes. Last week, a hunter entered a private farm and opened fire in the direction of workers in a field.
George Sammut, 47, from Rabat, says that in 30 years of practising bird hunting, he has never managed to turn in anyone who shot at a protected bird.
“Many people question whether the hunting community is capable of policing its own members to make sure we’re all abiding by the law. And the truth is we can’t,” Sammut told Bis-Serjetà.
“You see, poachers are very sneaky. It’s almost impossible to catch them. This is because they aren’t actually human. They’re a race of supernatural beings, totally different from human Maltese hunters and yet completely indistinguishable from us except for their cold dead eyes. They even become FKNK members to better blend in with us.
“And aside from the camouflage that we all wear, they can also turn invisible after they kill a protected species. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen one of them kill a protected bird, get out my phone to call the police, and then poof! they vanish into thin air.”
Asked how observers from organisations like Birdlife and CABS managed to spot illegal hunting,” Sammut shrugged and said:
“I don’t know. Many people in Birdlife and CABS are creatures who are not of our world too. A lot of Italians and Germans I believe. They’re the worst.”
Sammut stressed that regular hunters do not need any help to deal with the supernatural hunter problem.
“If you all leave us alone, we’ll figure it out one day,” he said.
