President George Vella has responded to calls for him to resign by reassuring his detractors that he doesn’t actually do anything.
Vella served as foreign minister under Joseph Muscat, making him part of the cabinet that was held collectively responsible for inaction leading up to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. NGO Repubblika, as well as Simon Busuttil, have said he should step down.
“I’m frankly perplexed by the calls for me to resign. Not because there isn’t cause for me to go, but because I don’t actually do anything. I thought everyone knew that,” His Excellency told Bis-Serjetà.
“Well, that’s not entirely true. Sometimes I tell Labour and PN to be nice to each other, and I host pro-life groups that harass women. But aside from that, I usually spend my time staring blankly at the wall,” he said, adding that if someone else replaced him, they would probably end up doing the same.
“Ooh and occasionally I kill swans, although I’ve been told to stop doing that because it frightens children who visit San Anton gardens.
Asked if he would be commenting on the case of two Turkish mothers being imprisoned and separated from their chidren, His Excellency replied:
“I haven’t been told to, so no. Besides, they aren’t foetuses, so who cares?”
