Prison holds open day for fans of torture

Karl Stennienibarra

Kordin Correctional Facility is this weekend holding an open day for people who approve of the prison director’s draconian methods.

Visitors will be guided around the prison grounds by staff and shown the various methods used by Alexander Dalli to instil fear in inmates. Unlike when journalists and NGOs visit, all areas of the prison are accessible.

“We created this event for people who say things like ‘It’s a prison not a five-star hotel’ – people who correctly believe prison should primarily be a place of punishment, rather than rehabilitation,” Dalli told Bis-Serjetà.

By far the most popular attraction at the prison is the infamous punishment chair. Several visitors crowded around the chair to watch an inmate who had committed a minor transgression being stripped naked, blindfolded and tied to the chair.

“Remember everyone, this chair doesn’t exist,” a warden/guide told the crowd with a wink.

Later in the tour, visitors learn about how staff drive inmates to suicide.

Meanwhile, in the prison yard, several people took part in shooting effigies of Peppi and Andrew Azzopardi.

Before leaving, visitors are asked to light a candle in front of a picture of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

“None of this would be possible without the minister’s blessing,” Dalli said.

At the time of writing, Dalli had just sent a child to solitary confinement for sneezing.
