Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech will start wearing different hats when addressing the party’s conservative and liberal factions.
The new policy comes after Grech said during an interview on the party’s radio station earlier this week that anyone who is in favour of legalising access to safe abortion does not belong in the PN. He had previously said the issue of abortion was a complex one that should be debated in parliament, and last week jumped to the defence of a pro-choice PN candidate who faced a torrent of abuse from pro-life trolls.
“I realise that my words caused a lot of confusion the other day. You see, when I said I didn’t want pro-choice people in the party, I was specifically speaking to the conservative people in the party. The liberal wing wasn’t meant to hear that,” Grech said, adding that he still told pro-choice members they were welcome.
From now on, Grech will wear a bishop’s mitre when addressing the religious faction, while when addressing the liberals, he will don a bicycle helmet with a dildo stuck to it.
“That way, we can remain a united party despite seemingly irreconcilable differences.”
The idea of wearing different hats is thought to be the brainchild of the PN’s head of strategy, Chris Peregin, who is said to have also proposed telling the different factions to close their eyes and ears when they heard Grech saying something they disagreed with.
Following Grech’s interview on Monday, Peregin was spotted leaving Dar Ċentrali and heading to the nearest bar.
