A man who is being attacked by a swarm of Oriental hornets is demanding he be stung by Maltese hornets instead.
Mario Bezzina, 52, from Qormi, accidentally disturbed a nest while repairing an airconditioning unit. As a result, the agitated hornets swarmed and began stinging him.
“No, no, I’m sorry, but I’m fed up of all these foreign insects coming to Malta and ruining our ecosystems,” Mr Bezzina said as he tried to swat away the hornets that were taking turns to pierce his exposed skin with their venomous barbs.

“I’ve nothing against members of the vespidae family…ouch…But there was a time when you could get stung by…ouch…good, honest Maltese hornets, and it was just as painful if not more so,” he added before demanding to speak to the hornets’ queen.
“I want to tell her to take her drones and go back to China or wherever it is they came from. And I want the government to encourage the spread of hornets born locally. I don’t care how many honey bees they kill, as long as they’re Maltese.”
Mr Bezzina then proceeded to fall off his ladder.
“Great, now when I go to Mater Dei to get the stings and broken bones treated, the nurse will probably be Indian. If that’s the case, I’d rather be eaten by these hornets,” he lamented.
