The Armed Forces of Malta have sent out a patrol boat to come to the rescue of Prime Minister Robert Abela, whose yacht sent out a distress call from the Caribbean.
Abela’s yacht was sailing between the islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat, where the Prime Minister is enjoying one last holiday before having to return to work, when it is believed the engine stopped working.
After receiving the distress call, the AFM promptly readied a patrol boat to make the 7,742 km-long journey to rescue the Prime Minister and his family.
“The AFM is committed to saving lives at sea. The fact the Prime Minister’s boat is not currently in Malta’s search and rescue zone is immaterial. We never split hairs that way,” AFM commander Colonel Clinton O’Neill told Bis-Serjetà.
Col. O’Neill insisted the AFM also did not pick and choose who to rescue.
“Imagine if we started leaving people to drown just because they aren’t white or wealthy. That would be horrific,” he added.
Update: It has transpired that the Prime Minister’s yacht had not stopped, but had run out of ice cream.
