The 40 ‘new’ buses unveiled by Malta Public Transport yesterday are actually just old buses that never turned up when they were supposed to, Bis-Serjetà can reveal.
According to a government source who asked not to be named, MPT has recently been making efforts to round up buses whose drivers failed to arrive at their scheduled stops.
“While public transport users who had been left stranded probably assumed their bus had taken the wrong route or arrived at the bus stop very early or late, the truth is that the bus drivers had been going rogue and even we couldn’t find them,” the source claimed.
“Recently more and more drivers were going off the grid, so we hired a crack team of bus hunters to track them down.”
The source said that most drivers were found hiding out at various pastizzerias across the island.
“When we finally rounded them all up, we obviously didn’t want to admit to the public that we’d lost a bunch of buses. So Ian Borg had the great idea to give them a lick of paint, fix the leaking air conditioning and present them as brand new additions to the fleet.
At the time of writing, 10 of the buses’ air conditioning systems had already started leaking again, while the other 30 were stuck in traffic.
