The hospital food situation is not sexy enough to merit the government’s attention, the Health Ministry said this afternoon.
Operations at Mater Dei Hospital have been postponed this week as a result of industrial action by nurses, who are demanding better-quality meals at the hospital canteen.
“We’d love to resolve the situation, but hospital food isn’t sexy enough to merit a sponsored post on Facebook, unfortunately,” a spokesperson for the Health Ministry said.
“It’s not a brand new stretch of road that you can take cool drone footage of, or a famous singer you can invite over for a free concert at the Fosos,” he continued.
The spokesman added that, even if the hospital found a better caterer, Instagram analytics showed that pictures of doctors and nurses stuffing their faces with hearty lunches did not perform well.
“We asked local influencers to come over to the hospital and serve food to patients, so we can inject some glitz and glamour into it, but they turned us down when they found out Mater Dei isn’t located on a yacht.
Asked why Chris Fearne – a prospective Labour leadership candidate once Joseph Muscat steps down – couldn’t resolve the impasse, the spokesperson insisted:
“It’s not Chris’s fault his portfolio isn’t social media friendly, unlike those attention whores Ian and Konrad. And besides, this doesn’t affect a huge number of people so it won’t affect our votes that much.”
