The only officer in the Malta Police Force’s Traffic Branch who wasn’t suspended this morning has collapsed onto his bed, after what he described as ‘a long day’.
Police Constable Ian Abdilla had to manage all of Malta’s traffic by himself today, after dozens of his colleagues were suspended on suspicion of claiming thousands of euros worth of overtime they had never worked.
“Oh man, I’ve never been so exhausted in my entire life. It really is crazy out there,” said Abdilla, who had been patrolling the length and breadth of Malta and Gozo on his motorbike since 6am this morning.
” At one point I was issuing a ticket to a woman who drove the wrong way down a one-way road in Marsascala, when a call came in about a construction truck belching black fumes in Nadur. And of course I had to deal with the hundreds of bumper-to-bumper collisions along the way. Why can’t people just drive like normal human beings in this country?”
Abdilla said he was meant to still be at work but couldn’t keep his eyes open any longer.
“Screw it. Everyone can have a free-for-all tonight. Not that they normally give a shit anyway. Actually, I might claim I did go into work,” he said before passing out.
