Maltese couples have broken the Guinness World Record for number of people having sex in cars at the same time.
3,472 couples ended Valentine’s Day with a bang last night by driving to dark, secluded car parks all over the island and engaging in public sex acts, or ‘dogging’ as it is known in the UK.
Car parks were so busy that parkers – usually seldom seen late at night – began emerging from their burrows to ask for money.
The new record – which had been held for the past 30 years by the Latvian town of Liepāja – was confirmed by several middle-aged male adjudicators from Guinness World Records, who were present at all the popular car-sex locations, carrying clipboards and wearing trench coats.
“You need to make sure people aren’t just getting fingered and being given hand jobs, because those don’t count. After a few years in the game you start to get a feel for these things and don’t even have to peer through the foggy windows anymore, although I still do that, of course,” said professional car-sex adjudicator Pierre Vert, who was monitoring a packed Ta’ Qali car park.
Couples who spoke to Bis-Serjetà were delighted to have done their bit to break the record.
“Malta has been in the international news for all the wrong reasons lately, so it’s nice that we’re contributing to a feel-good story,” said Simon Tonna, who was with his girlfriend at the so-called Top of the World in Għargħur.
“My husband and I have a house with a really comfortable king-size bed, but neither of us can get off unless we’re twisting ourselves into pretzel shapes in the back of this Toyota Vitz,” said Deborah Falzon, who was part of the record-breaking group in Buskett.
Prime Minister Robert Abela and his wife Lydia also took part in the successful attempt, choosing the car park behind the Excelsior Hotel in Floriana as their spot.
“This record shows that the Maltese people are united. Despite our political differences, we all have one thing in common: our love for shagging in cars. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back for sloppy seconds,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pierre Vert said he was looking forward to coming back in November to adjudicate on the world record for biggest number of childbirths on the same day.
“I’ll be there in the delivery rooms, don’t you worry,” he said.
