Gozo has completed construction of a perimeter wall to keep the Covid-19 coronavirus from arriving on the island.
Work on the 20-metre-high breeze-block wall – which encircles the entire island – started on Friday, after the Gozo Ministry enlisted every Gozitan man, woman and child to help.
“I’d like to see Covid-19 try to infect Gozitans now. Between the wall and all the prayers we’ve been saying, there’s no way it’s getting in,” said Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, adding that, from today, neither people nor goods would be allowed to set foot on the island.
“To make up for the shortfall in food supplies, we are increasing ġbejna production by 20 percent. Hunters will be allowed to shoot protected birds, as well as anyone caught sneezing.”
As part of the measures, the Gozo ferry service will be suspended until further notice. Addressing Maltese people, Camilleri said:
“You’d better not try and dig that tunnel now.”
The minister also had a message for Gozitan people affected by the self-blockade.
“We hope this will pass soon. Until then, stay indoors and spend some quality time with your loved sheep.”
Construction of the wall was overseen by Gozitan developer Joseph Portelli, at a cost of €10 million.
