Malta will be celebrating the return of air pollution in the form of airline emissions with a massive display of air pollution in the form of fireworks.
The Tourism Ministry announced yesterday that the reopening of the Malta International Airport on July 1st would be commemorated with a huge nationwide pyrotechnic display involving 31 firework factories.
Commercial airliners are one of the most polluting forms of transport in the world, while fireworks also cause extensive pollution, leaving metal particles, dangerous toxins, and harmful chemicals in the air, which eventually enter the water supply and soil.
“Because of Covid-19, we lost a lot of the air pollution we all know and love, thanks to less car, air and sea traffic. Now I’m delighted to say it’s all finally coming back with a bang. A huge, potassium-nitrate-filled bang,” Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli told Bis-Serjetà.
Farrugia Portelli also confirmed plans to celebrate the return of cruise ships with a five-hour-long sychronised display just outside the entrance to the Grand Harbour, involving 10 of the world’s biggest liners sailing at full power.
“We’re sure the residents of Valletta and Floriana will thank us for returning that sorely missed black soot to their lungs and house facades,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, a 1000-guest party is also being planned for the Blue Lagoon in Comino, complete with the biggest sound system currently available.
