The government has announced plans to house elderly care home residents who test positive for Covid-19 on board a repurposed ship moored out at sea.
The decision comes in the wake of several outbreaks of the coronavirus in care homes across the country, with the death toll also slowly creeping up.
“It’s vital that we separate those elderly people who have Covid-19 from the rest of the population, especially their fellow senior citizens,” a government spokeswoman told Bis-Serjetà.
“And while cramming all our elderly onto a disused cargo ship like they’re cattle is arguably not the best solution, we have to be consistent with our previous decisions,” she added, presumably referring to the governmen’ts plans to keep migrants quarantined on board another ship.
The tender, released this morning, calls for a vessel capable of accommodating up to 300 elderly people. The winner of the tender will also have to ensure the ship is equipped with stairlifts, defibrillators and tombla facilities, as well as a steady supply of Diet Kinnie.
