Yorgen Fenech, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, attempted to buy an Acme anvil from the dark web, police revealed in court today.

Testifying during today’s sitting of the public inquiry into Caruana Galizia’s murder, police said that in September last year, they were alerted to Fenech’s attempted purchase of the anvil by Special Agent Daffy Duck of the FBI.

Leaked messages between Fenech and the Acme corporation show that, before settling on the anvil, the former Tumas Group CEO inquired about buying dynamite, but ultimately decided it was too risky. He also ruled out ordering a 10,000 lb weight, due to the high cost of shipping it to Malta.

It is not known precisely why Fenech wanted to buy the anvil. However, in one of the recordings taken by Melvin Theuma that were played in court in recent months, Fenech can be heard asking whether, the following day, Theuma could meet him beneath Manuel Dimech bridge in St Julian’s.

In previous court sittings it had also emerged that, in the same month as the attempted anvil purchase, Fenech had been cautioned by the police for painting a tunnel entrance onto a wall in Valletta while high on cocaine. Before being detained, he is reported to have held up a placard saying ‘Have mercy!’.

Upon finishing his cross-examination, parte civile lawyer Jason Azzopardi said, “That’s all, folks.”
