‘Ajma Żobbi U Ajma L-Bajd’ voted Malta’s best folk song

Ajma Żobbi U Ajma L-Bajd‘ has been voted as Malta’s best folk song of all time.

The song, whose refrain goes ‘Aj aj aj kull filgħodu jiena ngħid/Aj aj aj ajma żobbi u ajma l-bajd (ai ai ai every mornign I say/ai ai ai ouch my dick and ouch my balls), is about a man’s daily struggle to overcome various penis and toilet-related problems he has throughout his day.

It beat off stiff competition from other much-loved folk songs such as Lanċa Ġejja U Oħra Sejra, Ċeklem Ċeklem Karozzin and Busha Busha La Tistħix in a nationwide poll conducted by the Maltese Folk Song Association (MFSA).

Ajma Żobbi is the quintessential song of the common Maltese people. Well, the common man, at any rate. Just like all good Maltese things, it totally excludes women,” said MFSA chairman Joseph Cuschieri.

“Take the opening lyrics: ‘Kull filgħodu inqum imdamdam qisni biċċa xiħ marid/Naqbad żobbi u nfaqqagħlu ħa nneħħilu s-sadid‘. Such vivid poetic imagery! And so relatable too.

“And unlike karozzini (horse-drawn carriages), aches and pains in the groin area and running out of toilet paper will always be around, so I think the song will stand the test of time and continue to be sung for decades to come.”

Meanwhile, Xemx Wisq Sabiħa by The Tramps was left out of the poll, after a Bis-Serjetà article last year revealed the song is actually about heroin.
