Arguing with people who describe themselves as being pro-life is worse for your health than being aborted while still in the womb, a new study has shown.
The study was carried out by Professor Imona Jetski at the American University of Malta. It involved scanning the brains of 20 pro-choice test subjects while they became entangled in arguments about abortion on Facebook.
“Arguing with people on social media is never a good idea, but arguing with so-called pro-lifers seems to have particularly adverse effects on the human psyche, with participants experiencing a total loss of faith in humanity if exposed for too long,” Prof Jetski told Bis-Serjetà.
Prof Jetski said it was difficult to pinpoint which pro-life arguments and logical fallacies were the most detrimental to a person’s will to live.
“Individual participants reacted differently to different arguments, of which there are several. There’s the classic ‘abortion is murder’, the beauty of which is that it’s so short, simple and emotive you can repeat it without having to back up your claim. It’s especially infuriating because there are only so many ways to say ‘No it isn’t’ before you feel like smashing your head against your desk,” she said.
“Then, of course, there’s the argument that abortion is somehow against the will of God, despite the fact that according to the Bible, God slaughtered thousands of innocent children on a whim. And that’s not even counting the innumerable miscarriages He has allowed to happen, presumably part of his mysterious method of working.”
According to the findings of the study, the pro-life argument that elicited the strongest response was “women who want to legalise abortion should keep their legs shut instead”.
“One woman flung a chair through a window when she read that,” the professor said.
Prof Jetski added that attempting to reason with so-called pro-lifers was futile.
“Using sarcasm and irony in the face of such stupidity can be a useful defence mechanism, but ultimately it’s better if you are aborted and cease to exist before you learn that you share a planet with pro-lifers,” she said.
