Newly appointed Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech has promised to sign French superstar Kylian Mbappé.
Grech is confident of finalising a deal for the 21-year-old World-Cup winner with his current club, Paris Saint-Germain, before the transfer window closes tomorrow night.
“During my campaign I promised to inject the party with youthful energy, and I intend to do just that by signing one of the best players in the world right now,” Grech said this morning.
While Grech was criticised for not presenting any concrete proposals during his campaign, signing Mbappé would be a huge statement of intent, with PN desperate to catch up with their bitter rivals The Labour Party, who are funded by Azerbaijani oil and gas money.
The new PN leader also dismissed concerns that the party was already heavily skewed towards the right wing.
“As good as he is, Edwin Vassallo is in the twilight of his career, so it’s vital we find a replacement who can play a similar position,” Grech insisted.
Asked how the cash-strapped party would fund the signing of the world’s most expensive football player, who is valued at €180 million, Grech said:
“We plan to organise several coffee mornings, majjalatas, and of course tombla.”
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Greek centre-back Kostas Manolas is also keen on a move to PN, after Grech met the footballer while on holiday and convinced him they were compatriots.
In a statement, the Labour Party criticised’s PN’s approach for Mbappé, accusing them of wanting to fill the country with young, black football players.
“But we’re not racist or anything,” the party insisted.
