The recent spate of cars flipping over on Malta’s roads is being caused by a software bug in the country’s physics engine, according to the Malta Police Force.
A car overturned in Nadur last Saturday during Carnival weekend, while earlier in the week another two cars in Mġarr and Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq suffered the same fate. No one was seriously injured in the crashes, but several people have expressed concern about the growing trend.
While various causes have been suggested – such as speeding and drink driving – police said the incidents were not caused by human error.
“We can confirm that these accidents were caused by a bug in Malta’s physics engine that makes cars overturn randomly and without warning. It has nothing to do with alcohol consumption or bad driving, so motorists should drive as they do normally,” a police spokesperson said.
The police advised motorists not to drive in the locations where the rollovers happened for the time being in case further glitches occur.
“We’ve contacted the developers and they’ve promised to address the bug in the next patch.”
This is not the first time bugs have been found on Malta’s roads. Only last week, it was found that more than half of Malta’s traffic police were breaking the law themselves, while holes in the tarmac also have to be patched regularly.
“Frankly we believe they should have worked on Malta longer instead of releasing it in a hurry while it was still buggy as hell,” the spokesperson lamented.
Meanwhile, the developers have announced they will soon make ‘sanity’ available as paid DLC.
