Christmas still definitely on despite 100+ Covid deaths, Abela reassures

Prime Minister Robert Abela has reassured people that Christmas is still definitely on, despite Malta’s Covid-19 death toll reaching and exceeding 100.

The three deaths registered yesterday brought the number of people who have succumbed to the virus in Malta to 102.

But in an interview on ONE TV this morning, Abela echoed the words of Jason Micallef, who last week said that Covid would not kill Christmas.

“I want to reassure the people who are concerned that this grim milestone will cause the government to put people’s lives ahead of Christmas celebrations that they have nothing to worry about,” Abela said.

“As part of our efforts to save the holiday season, we’ve set up a special Christmas Taskforce, whose job it is to spread cheer and make sure Malta is a negativity-free zone over the next few weeks. For example, one thing they will be doing is carrying out inspections on shops to make sure they’re playing Christmas songs at all times.”

The Prime Minister added that the government was also exploring the possibility of making the wearing of Santa hats mandatory, both in public and in people’s homes.

Asked whether restrictions put in place at the start of this month would be lifted in December, even if the current trend of new cases and deaths continues, Abela said:

“Certainly. We could have 1,000 deaths a day, with corpses piling up in morgues, but I’ll be damned if I don’t allow Maltese people to welcome baby Jesus into the world with shopping and mountains of food.”
