EU declares only Clint Camilleri can be called a ġbejna

Karl Stennienibarra

The European Union has ruled that Minister For Gozo Clint Camilleri is the only politician who can be called a ġbejna.

Camilleri was famously called a ġbejna by former Partit Demokratiku MP Marlene Farrugia during a debate in parliament in 2018.

In what is being described as a landmark decision, the EU’s Regional Insult Designation Committee said that while it recognised the existence of other Gozitan MPs, such as Education Minister Justyne Caruana, Camilleri had been called a ġbejna first, and so deserved special protection.

“Other politicians, Maltese or otherwise, can be called a mogħża, tronġa, kaboċċa, kretin, korrott, defiċenti, għoxx ta’ baqra, but the epithet of ‘ġbejna’ belongs solely to Hon. Camilleri,” said the committee’s chairman, Gunther Von Der Schnitzel.

Meanwhile, critics of Nationalist MP Edwin Vassallo have applied for similar protection for the insult of ‘dinosaur’.
