Labour leadership contenders Chris Fearne and Robert Abela will engage in a fight to the death tonight to decide who will lead the country.
The fight will take place at the 5,000 capacity Corradino Sports Complex in Paola, right after outgoing prime minister Joseph Muscat finishes his farewell speech.
Labour leaders are traditionally selected through mortal combat. In 2008, Joseph Muscat defeated George Abela, father of Robert Abela, but chose to spare his life.
“We chose this relatively small venue because blood sports aren’t as popular as they once were,” Labour CEO Randolph Debattista told Bis-Serjetà.
“However, the venue’s layout makes it ideal for a gory duel to the death.”
Fearne and Abela will be able to choose from a variety of melee weapons. The former has previously indicated his preference for the trident, while the latter is thought to prefer a pair of daggers.
Supporters of both candidates, who will be pitched at opposite sides of the pavillion, will be allowed to shoot arrows and throw stones.
If at any point there is a lull in the fight, Michael Falzon will be released into the ‘arena’ to create some drama.
