Foreign residents in Malta have told Bis-Serjetà they are curious to find out which of the two main parties will make the most xenophobic statement this week.
As the campaigns for the local and European Parliament elections heat up, the Labour Party is currently in the lead when it comes to xenophobic gaffes, after Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said last week that foreigners should serve Maltese people by picking up their rubbish.
However, the Nationalist Party could reclaim the top spot it held only a week previously, when the party released a spoof billboard saying the Government had “filled Malta with foreigners.”
“I can’t wait to find out who’s going to make me feel unwelcome this week. Maybe Adrian Delia will say we all smell of curry,” said bus driver Asif Chowdhury, who is from Bangladesh.
“I mean, I’m providing a vital yet thankless public service while contributing to the economy by paying taxes and spending my admittedly meagre wages, but who am I to get in the way of the parties pandering to right-wing voters?” he added.
“It’s interesting to see your political parties insult people like me who keep the streets clean. If we stopped doing our jobs, Maltese society would collapse in days,” said Somali rubbish collector Ibraahin Dualeh
“Actually make that hours, you guys are such filthy bastards.”
“They know I can vote right?” asked Italian bartender Massimo Aquilani.
“Like, if there was one election where you should probably go easy on the ‘go back to your country’, surely it’s the one in which EU nationals actually have a say.”
Bookmakers also have odds for less likely outcomes in this week’s xenophobe-off, including Godfrey and Marlene Farrugia admitting they have a concentration camp in their back garden, and Norman Lowell saying black people are actually quite nice once you get to know them.
