Għadira sunbed operators now placing umbrellas in the sea

Operators at Għadira Bay have started placing floating sunbeds and umbrellas in the sea, after taking up every last grain of sand on Malta’s biggest beach.

The operator, Ladri Lido and Beach Club, received a shipment of new sunbeds equipped with flotation devices this morning, allowing them to expand from the beach into the bay itself.

“Initially we’re adding 20 floating sunbeds that will be tied up to 50 metres away from the shoreline. But eventually we plan to extend our reach as far away as 5km out to sea,” Ladri Lido owner Charles Mifsud told Bis-Serjetà.

“Having said that, we can’t be held responsible if our customers are struck by watercraft, eaten by a shark, or if the tether snaps and they end up drifting to Sicily. All thanks to Jason Azzopardi. What a guy.”

Mifsud added that he also had plans to go backwards and eventually put sunbeds on the road behind the beach, demolish the Red Tower and replace it with sunbeds, as well as dig down into the beach itself to create an underground multi-storey sunbed area.

“One day my umbrellas will cover the entire world in darkness,” he said.
