Heavy flooding reported in Birkirkara after man drops bottle of water

Heavy flooding has been reported on Valley Road in Birkirkara this afternoon, after a man accidentally dropped an open bottle of water on the ground.

The man was drinking from the 50-cl bottle of San Michel mineral water he had just bought from a vending machine, when it slipped from his grasp and fell to the floor.

Before he could pick it up, the bottle spilled its contents onto the pavement, blocking drains and causing a flash flood that engulfed the entire road.

The resulting torrent of water meant the Civil Protection Department had to rescue several trapped motorists from their cars.

CPD director Emanuel Psaila told Bis-Serjetà people needed be more cautious when drinking water – or any beverage – in flood-prone areas.

“I would also strongly advise parents to avoid walking down places like Valley Road with their kids when the latter are crying. Even just a few tears can cause pandemonium,” Psaila said.

Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg went a step further. Speaking at his 52nd press conference of the day, the minister said drinking water should be banned completely.
