Bird hunting in Malta will be completely unregulated following the transfer of the hunting regulator from the Environment Ministry to the Gozo Ministry.
After yesterday’s announcement of the transfer, hunters on the mainland will now be free to shoot whatever species they like, whenever they like, with whatever they like, and in unlimited quantities. As a result, the police’s Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) unit has been disbanded.
“After the changeover it didn’t make logical sense to carry on regulating hunting in Malta. After all, why would a ministry responsible solely for Gozitan affairs have any say on anything happens across the channel in Malta?” said Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who is himself a hunter.
Hunters in Malta expressed their delight at the news of the non-stop open season.
“This is amazing. It’s like Christmas has come early. I can’t wait to shoot every living creature out of the sky while forcing Birdlife to watch helplessly. I mean, I already do that, but at least now it’s legal,” one hunter told Bis-Serjetà.
“I’ve already ordered an anti-aircraft gun from the dark web. It’s free shipping from Libya, which is nice,” said another, who has also started work on a fortified anti-bird installation in Fomm ir-Riħ.
Meanwhile, the government has not ruled out transferring other regulatory bodies to Gozo in the future.
“We might put the MFSA there next. It’s not like it does anything anyway, a government spokesman said.
