President George Vella has responded to criticism over his intention to address an anti-abortion rally by declaring he will never get an abortion.
The President has angered pro-choice activities by accepting an invitation to speak at the ‘Manifestation In Favour Of Life’, a protest happening in Valletta this Sunday.
However, despite the fact that the World Health Organisation recommends giving women access to safe and legal abortion, Vella – a former doctor himself – doubled down on his anti-abortion stance.
“These baby killers can complain all they want. Life is sacred and under no circumstances will I ever get an abortion, or be forced to get one. No way. If I ever get pregnant I will carry the baby until birth, as everyone should do. Or else God will be angry and he’ll send an earthquake or tsunami or something,” he said.
The President also dismissed calls for him to remain neutral on such a sensitive issue.
“The constitution may have stopped me from intervening in the political crisis two months ago, but it doesn’t stop me from telling women what to do with their bodies,” he said.
