Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg has told people who want more trees to buy a tract of land in Baħrija.
Borg was referring to 240 tumoli of land between Baħrija and Mġarr, which an unknown person put up for sale for €5 million on Facebook last week.
“Why do people keep pestering me to not cut down trees? Last I looked, I’m the Infrastructure Minister, the minister for tarmac, concrete, and progress, not the minister for tree hugging,” Borg told Bis-Serjetà.
“If people love trees so much they should buy that parcel of land in Baħrija and plant as many of the damn things as they want. It only costs €5 million. Go crazy, plant a whole forest. Stick an outdoor gym in it, seeing as those seem to be popular all of a sudden. I mean I’ll probably pass a six-lane bypass through the place at some point, but it’s not a priority at the moment so enjoy it while it lasts.
“Or there’s always the option of conning a mentally ill man out of his land. That works too, so I’m told.”
Borg concluded by complaining about people who “wanted everything to be provided for free by the government.”
“Do they think we’re socialists or something? I don’t know where they got that idea from.”
