Jason Micallef to add plastic-covered sofas to Freedom Square

Jason Micallef, the chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency, has announced that plastic-covered chairs will soon be placed

The red velvet sofas with plastic covers, an essential feature of a traditional Maltese house’s salott, will be placed besides the recently installed wooden flower pots. The latter were initially part of the Valletta Green Festival, but have now been made permanent.

“Many people complain to me that there’s nowhere to sit down in Freedom Square, so I asked myself ‘What’s the most classiest seating in the world?’ The traditional Maltese plastic-covered sofa of course,” Micallef told Bis-Serjetà, while noting that the plastic covers would make the sofas weatherproof.

“I’m not usually one for bold predictions, but I think, in 1000 years time, when everything else in Valletta has crumbled to dust, the sofas will remain untouched – a monument to great taste.”

Micallef clarified that the public would not be allowed to sit on the chairs all year round.

“Only on special occasions, like during a Papal visit or state funeral. Don’t you dare stain the plastic with your butts on any other day.”
