Disgraced former prime minister Joseph Muscat has volunteered to join the army of Azerbaijan and fight in the conflict against Armenia in the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Fighting between the two Caucasian nations has raged for the past two weeks, as a territorial dispute stretching back decades has once again re-ignited.
During his tenure as prime minister, Muscat maintained a close relationship with Azerbaijan’s government, led by Ilham Aliyev. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) owns a 33 per cent stake in the controversial Electrogas project.
“When I needed help to defeat the evil Nationalist Party, the glorious nation of Azerbaijan came to my aid. Now, I’m returning the favour,” Muscat, who was wearing Azeri military fatigues, told Bis-Serjetà via video link while posing next to a machine gun.
Muscat has joined a brigade of foreign fighters that also includes Syrian mercenaries and former ISIS militants.
“If you never hear from me again, assume I have fallen in battle. Don’t send anyone to look for me – just erect a statue in Castille Square in my honour.”
Meanwhile, Michelle Muscat – who is friends with Aliyev’s daughter Leyla – has announced she plans to take part in a charity swim in aid of Azerbaijan’s military.
