Former Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana has returned to being a simple shepherd on her native island after being forced to quit today.
Caruana tendered her resignation this morning following revelations that her husband, former police inspector Silvio Valletta, was close to Yorgen Fenech, the man accused of ordering the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Before entering politics, Caruana was one of Gozo’s foremost shepherds, owning a flock of around 100 sheep in the village of Kerċem.
“I have decided to retire from politics completely to spend more time with my flock. I realised that politics is too dirty for me, and that I much prefer a simple pastoral life, as most of my fellow Gozitans do,” Caruana told Bis-Serjetà while leading the sheep back into their pen before nightfall.
Despite calling it a day, Caruana insisted that she did not share all of her husband’s friendships.
“Yorgen, no! Come back here!” she yelled at one of her sheep who was scampering away from the main flock.
“Oh erm…it’s not what you think. He isn’t named after Yorgen Fenech. Yorgen is a really common’s sheep’s name in Gozo.”
