Supporters of the Labour Party have begun queueing outside the party’s headquarters in Hamrun, asking to be overcharged even more on their electricity bills.
Last week, a draft report by the National Audit Office revealed that ARMS Ltd could have overcharged consumers on their electricty and water bills by as much as €6.5 million.
While no explanation or apology has been forthcoming from the government, Labour today issued a call for people to go to Mile End if they wanted to be charged even more.
The call was taken up by hundreds of party supporters, who began lining up in droves this morning with bills in hand.
“I’ve been overcharged €300 on my electricity bill, but if the party wants me to pay more then I’ll gladly do so if it goes towards a billboard in the next election,” said Labourite John Grima.
“If this happened under PN, I’d be absolutely fuming, but we’re under Labour so it’s fine. Plus, the government have said time and again that they’ve saved us €100 million on energy bills. I don’t know where they got that figure from, or whether they’ve subtracted the €6.5 million, but who am I to question anything?” said fellow support Margaret Debono.
“I can’t afford to pay more, so I’ve brought my daughter to give to the party instead. She’ll make a fine new wife for a minister if his current one divorces him for sleeping with his secretary,” said another.
Mingling among the crowd were former Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, and current minister Miriam Dalli, who explained to people how much they had been overcharged and what they had to do to be charged even more.
“It’s when I look at these shee…I mean people, that I miss being a Labour minister the most,” Mizzi said.
“I am Miriam Dalli and I can do no wrong,” Dalli added.
