Lionel Messi has his heart set on a move to Gudja United, according to reports.
The six-time Ballon D’Or winner has told Barcelona he wants to leave the club, and would be available on a free transfer.
And while Manchester City and Paris St-Germain have been touted as the favourites to sign him, Messi is understood to prefer a move to the BOV Premier League.
“Messi is attracted by the Gudja United project. He thinks they have a very nice website, and likes the fact that the village is conveniently located right next to the airport. This is a very big plus for him,” Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague told Bis-Serjetà.
Writing on Twitter, Italian pundit Fabrizio Romano claimed Messi was willing to take a 5000% pay cut to facilitate the move.
While Messi would arguably help United improve on the 11th place finish they achieved following their promotion from the Second Division last season, Blues head coach Jesmond Zammit was coy on a potential move.
“Messi is great and everything, but we’ve already signed six players this summer, so I’m not sure we need him. I also don’t think he fits into our style of play,” said Zammit, who took over from Josef Mansueto in May.
Should the transfer go through, Messi would likely be unveiled at Gudja’s annual majjalata on August 31.
