The vast majority of people who live in Gozo would much rather have a tunnel to the USA instead of one to Malta, according to a resident who spoke to Bis-Serjetà.
Various surveys have shown that the majority of people on the island are in favour of a tunnel to Malta. But locals say this is only because no other choice was given.
“Why is Malta the only option? Malta sucks. I want a tunnel to New York,” said Karl Fenech, 29, from Victoria.
An underwater tunnel from Gozo to New York would need to be roughly 7,500 kilometres long, and its cost would make it arguably the most expensive engineering project in human history.
“Don’t care. Want tunnel. Want drive. Want shopping,” Mr Fenech said.
He added that, to make the three-day drive easier, the tunnel could stop off in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean at the Azores islands, which are “like Gozo, but with whales.”
Mr Fenech also suggested there could be a secondary tunnel to the UK so Gozitans could easily get to Primark.
