Early this morning, Malta was rocked by the news that prominent businessman Yorgen Fenech had been arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. We went to Valletta to gauge people’s reactions…
“I’m sure he just forgot to renew his yacht licence.”
“What? A powerful Maltese businessman involved in Mafia-style criminality? Get out of here with your crazy theories.”
“Muscat should resign. Delia should resign. The President should resign. Ray Zazu Farrugia should resign. I should resign. Everyone in Malta should resign.”
“Innocent-but-running-away until proven guilty.”
“I don’t see how the arrest of a man in connection with the murder of a journalist who was investigating how he conspired to pay hundreds of thousands of euros into the shady offshore companies of two senior government officials via his own shady offshore company after winning the right to supply Malta’s energy for decades to come in association with a corrupt foreign regime changes absolutely anything at all.”
“I blame the immigrants.”
“Typical of Malta’s corrupt and incompetent police force to arrest him at 5:45am rather than the much more professional time of 5:30am.”
“U le jaħasra, impossible. I saw him at Holy Mass last Sunday.”
“Live and let live.”
“What sort of evil criminal mastermind doesn’t have a mini-submarine or spaceship he can escape in?”
“So is that yacht up for sale now? Asking for a friend.”
