Maltese dad’s disposable face-mask celebrates three-month anniversary

A Maltese dad’s disposable face mask has celebrated its third month of being worn.

Michael Micallef, 59, from Naxxar, purchased the single-use face mask from a pharmacy on March 11, four days after Malta recorded its first case of Covid-19.

During that time, Micallef has not cleaned the mask once, despite health authorities’ advice to either swap them out regularly or keep them in a sterile environment.

“At first I hated wearing it,” said Micallef, who keeps the mask in his pocket next to his keys and spare change when he isn’t using it.

“But to be honest, now I feel weird when I don’t have it on. And I can go to LIDL and mouth swear words at people who walk too slowly without them realising, which is great,” he added while scratching his face.

Asked why he hadn’t bought a reusable fabric face-mask from somewhere like Mellowmoon – where, coincidentally, people who donate to Bis-Serjetà get a 10% discount – Micallef said:

“Are you crazy? Have you see the prices? I’m not paying €4 when I bought mine for €2. No, this one is all I need, and I plan on wearing it forever,” he insisted.
