A self-styled Maltese patriot has expressed his boundless love for his country by leaving rubbish in Buskett.
George Psaila, his wife Maria and their two young children littered patriotically after a family picnic in one of Malta’s few green spaces last Sunday.
“I’m really proud of my country, so when it was time to leave Buskett I made sure not to properly dispose of our crisp packets, soft drinks bottles and plastic containers, despite the presence of a bin just 10 metres away from our picnic spot,” Psaila said.
The 44-year-old electrical engineer, who has a photo of the Maltese flag as his profile picture on Facebook and voted for Norman Lowell in the EP elections, says his family has previously littered at places such as Dingli Cliffs and Dwejra in Gozo, and after barbecues at several beaches.
“Malta is the best country in the world, and I’ve visited several others. For example, last summer we went to Switzerland on holiday and people got angry when I threw a chocolate wrapper into the river,” he said.
Mrs Psaila, who cleans the family home obsessively several times a day, adds that she and her husband are worried about the future of the country.
“There are too many foreigners coming over. And most of them don’t want to adopt Maltese values like treating everywhere like your own personal landfill,” she says.
“Whenever the African dustbin men pass by to steal our Maltese rubbish, I insult them so they feel as unwelcome as possible,” Mr Psaila adds.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to dump a fridge in Wied Speranza.”
