A lobby group representing some of the wealthiest people in Malta is demanding that the government subsidises caviar and other luxury foods.
The group of high-net-worth individuals in various industries said that inflation was hitting them just as hard as it was regular people.
“The prices at artisanal food stores have really shot up over the past few months. Or at least that’s what my Filippina tells me,” group spokesman and businessman Anglu Xuereb told Bis-Serjetà.
“If the government can intervene to limit the price of items like tinned tuna, pasta and long-life milk, then it’s only fair that it should also control the price of caviar, truffles and Kobe beef,” he added.
“For example, it used to cost €58 for 10 (ten) grams of Beluga caviar, but now it costs €60. How on earth will I manage?”

Developer Joseph Portelli said he was also feeling the pinch.
“I’m embarrassed to admit it but, this year, I only have five holidays booked so far, and only two of those are skiing trips in the Swiss Alps. At least let me continue to enjoy Alba truffle risotto,” he said.
Another businessman, who wished to remain anonymous, said the cost of living crisis had forced him to downgrade an upcoming yachting trip to the Caribbean.
“Now I can only afford one sack of the purest cocaine and two high-class prostitutes whose tits I can snort it off.”
One food importer in the group said there would be consequences if the government didn’t act.
“If we don’t get our way, I’ll raise prices of commoner foods even more. Enjoy paying 500 euros for a box of cornflakes, peasants.”
