The Malta Developers Association has remarked that Malta is really ugly.
The observation was made by MDA president Sandro Chetcuti.
“The other day I was walking through Sliema eating a kebab. In between bites I looked around me, and suddenly it struck me: ‘Man, what a fucking ugly town.’,” Chetcuti said.
“Ugly facades…monstrous modern buildings right next to smaller, older ones…pigeon-coop apartment blocks clearly designed to maximise profit and not livability…cheap materials…
“Feeling distraught, I got in my Ferrari and drove to the MDA headquarters in Pietà and noticed the same horrible mishmash of bad architecture. Who on earth allowed all this to happen? Why is there no regard for aesthetics or character?”
Chetcuti said he then headed to Mġarr in the hope of finding a village that wasn’t tainted by “the cancer of overdevelopment.”
“But once again – even in a town that’s meant to be rural – I was met with the same sight: a skyline that looks like a mouth full of broken teeth. Shouldn’t there be standards and planning laws in place to prevent this…this…this travesty? If only there was a powerful lobby group that could put pressure on the government to introduce such measures and stop developers running amok.”
Chetcuti added that throughout his journey across Malta, he also could not escape the constant thud of excavators and jackhammers.
“Thank God my villa in Fomm ir-Riħ was nearby. I think I’d go mad if I had to live in this hell all the time.”
