A planned yacht marina in Marsacala will benefit the thousands of Maltese people who own yachts, according to Prime Minister Robert Abela.
Abela, who owns a yacht himself, was speaking to One Radio following a press conference last Saturday by Moviment Graffitti, who oppose the marina.
“Thanks to all the wealth generated by this government, practically every Maltese citizen owns a luxury yacht,” Abela said, adding that under the previous government, people could only afford leaky fiberglass rowing boats.
“The problem is there isn’t enough space to moor them all. We only have marinas in Msida, Ta’ Xbiex, Pietà, Manoel Island, Floriana, St Julian’s, Birgu and Kalkara, so we definitely need at least one more, and probably one in every bay.
“Graffitti are just jealous because they’re all too poor to own a yacht, probably because they spend all their money on chocolate balls from Ġugar.”
Abela was unphased by a recent appearance of dolphins in the bay, a sight which critics of the marina say will no longer occur if the area is commercialised.
“When was the last time a dolphin actually spent money in Malta? I rest my case.
“Also a dolphin once made fun of the shape of my head while I was swimming off the coast of Siracusa.”
The Prime Minister said marinas also served to motivate people to work harder so they could afford even better boats.
“The more marinas we have, the more Russian oligarchs and super-rich people will anchor their mega yachts in our waters for locals to gawp at and say, “Ara, dak il-jott ta’ Abramovich!”
Meanwhile, President George Vella has spoken out about the marina.
“If it’s not in Zejtun, I don’t give a fuck,” he said.
