Michelle Muscat has grown a moustache in aid of Movember.
The Prime Minister’s wife, who chairs The Marigold Foundation charity, says she grew the moustache as part of the yearly global campaign to highlight men’s health issues.
“This is a cause that’s always been close to my heart, but whenever I told people I wanted to grow a moustache , they told me I couldn’t because I’m a woman,” Muscat said.
“Well, no one tells Michelle Muscat she can’t do something. So I spent the whole of last month at the Dominican Sisters’ Monastery in Rabat learning how nuns grow their lip fuzz.”
Muscat’s gesture, however generous, has not been without controversy.
While she says her moustache is 14 centimetres long from lip to tip – a claim repeated by Joseph Muscat and One News – an anonymous barber who spoke to Bis-Serjetà said the moustache did not look to be more than 10 centimetres long.
Muscat also denied suggestions that she had taken testosterone injections to speed up the growth process.
“Why can’t people just accept everything I do without question?” an exasperated Muscat said in a deep, booming voice.
