A middle-aged Maltese woman is wondering what horrific shit happening in Malta and the wider world she’ll downplay on Facebook this week.
Rita Spiteri, 45, makes it a point to play down the seriousness of every issue brought to light by local and international media.
“I’ve been quite busy downplaying things lately,” Spiteri told Bis-Serjetà.
“Two weeks ago I was commenting about how Greta Thunberg is autistic and that global warming isn’t as bad as people say.
“Then last week, after that man was spared jail for trying to rape a woman, I said ‘boys will be boys’ and that she probably brought it on herself. And I asked ‘What’s wrong with that?’ when the unedited footage of Luke Chetcuti name-dropping ministers was uploaded.”
Spiteri said she was as yet unsure who or what she would be making excuses for this week.
“I might say I agree with Turkey invading Syria and massacring Kurds because they need to prevent terrorism. Or maybe I’ll question the need for gay pride parades, or solidarity with immigrants. The world’s my oyster really.
“Actually, Daphne’s murder is back in the news, so I might just go for the old reliable ‘Where is her laptop?’ comments. Can’t go wrong with those.”
