The government is planning to hand over control of Kordin Correctional Facility to convicted murderers, Bis-Serjetà has learned.
The proposal was reportedly floated to the rest of the Cabinet by Prime Minister Robert Abela, with no ministers opposing the suggestion.
As part of the plans, inmates convicted of homicide will take over all jobs currently done by prison staff, including security, maintenance and serving meals to around 700 fellow inmates. The murderers will also control access to the facility, deciding who comes in and who goes out.
“Abela’s reasoning is that there’s no one more qualified to run the prison than those who have spent the longest time there,” a government source with knowledge of the proposal said.
The ‘Federezzjoni Qattiela, Narkotraffikanti u Korrotti’ (FQNK) praised the plans.
“Should this proposal go through, we pinky promise that we won’t get up to no good. As criminals, you can count on us to keep our word,” a spokesmurderer for the organisation said.
The organisation also confirmed it had already asked Yorgen Fenech, who is currently awaiting trial for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, to turn the prison into a luxury correctional facility, complete with two Michelin Star restaurants, infinity pool and cocaine silo.
