The Prime Minister has announced plans to build a country-wide metro system for the exclusive use of high-net-worth individuals.
Speaking at a press conference earlier this afternoon, Muscat said the luxury underground train system is expected to be completed by next month, following the importation of thousands of migrant workers from Asia.
Only those who earn at least €100,000 a year will be allowed to use it.
“No longer will the wealthy men and women of this country get stuck in rush-hour traffic while commuting to business breakfasts, board meetings and cocktail parties,” said Muscat, who arrived at the event in a chauffeur-driven car with a police escort.
The metro will go to every town, village and hamlet in the country, and will also cover Gozo, Comino, St Paul’s Island and Filfla.
Many of the stops will be located underneath the villas of the aforementioned wealthy individuals, as well as below five-star hotels, yacht marinas, upmarket restaurants and plots of unspoiled countryside crying out for development.
Several subterranean historical landmarks will be destroyed to make way for the metro, including the Hypogeum, the Rabat Catacombs and the crypt of St John’s Co-Cathedral.
When asked if any studies had been carried out, Muscat said that the Government had carried out a detailed study, which discovered a positive correlation between the happiness of the business class, and the size of their donations to the Labour Party.
Muscat added that, despite the fact they couldn’t use it, the metro would have benefits for normal people too.
“Regular workers will be able to go about their day without feeling jealous about the Ferrari that just overtook them,” he said.
