The proposed new subway near Bieb il-Bombi in Floriana will have the same smell of piss that characterises the existing underpasses in the area, infrastructure minister Ian Borg has confirmed.
In plans presented by Infrastructure Malta yesterday, the new subway will have a cafe, bicycle parking area and public toilets.
After artist’s impressions of the new underpass were made public, fans of the existing underpasses under St Anne Street, which were built in the 1960s, expressed concern that it would not smell of piss.
However, the infrastructure minister moved quickly to reassure people.
“Despite the modern facilities and natural lighting, I promise that, if approved by the Planning Authority, the new subway will absolutely reek of piss, just like the existing one.
“For hygiene purposes, it won’t be real human piss, but an artificial chemical compound that will be sprayed in aerosol form at regular intervals throughout the subway.
Borg said the government would also be working with Heritage Malta to employ actors to play drug addicts who will visit the subway from time to time.
“We are committed to keeping alive the history of this vibrant, piss-soaked, syringe-filled area alive,” Borg insisted.
