Not one driver on the island of Filfla was caught drinking and driving on New Year’s Day, according to the police.
“We are happy to report that, during our roadblock on Filfla last night, not a single person was arrested for driving under the influence,” the police said in a statement, while thanking the public for their cooperation.
“We hope this is a sign that Maltese people are finally learning that drink driving is reckless and dangerous.”
Despite the lack of drink-driving arrests, police said the tiny uninhabited island was not entirely crime-free last night.
A snail was fined for speeding, while a Maltese wall lizard endemic to Filfla was arrested after it was caught stealing an ant from another lizard.
